Video Call

Seeing a doctor is not easy for all Australian consumers, especially those who live in rural and remote parts of the country where a healthcare professional can be hours away.

Even for those who live in cities, access to healthcare can be a challenge if their ability to travel is restricted.

Video Call has been developed by Healthdirect Australia to make it easy for healthcare providers to offer their services via video consultation. Consumers can connect with their healthcare professional from their home, from work, or from wherever is most convenient, using everyday devices – smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.

How does healthdirect Video Call work?

healthdirect Video Call provides a single, consistent entry point on the health services’ webpage for all their patients. From there, patients enter an online waiting area for their appointment. All patients enter the same way, reducing the need for administrative staff to generate a separate link, code or dial-in information for each patient. This has many advantages, including being able to use a single appointment confirmation template for all patients, enabling Video Call to operate at scale.

Unlike traditional video conferencing, patients do not need an account, special software or dial-in details, which reduces the need for extra resources or systems to support video consulting.

Healthcare professionals engage in the same way they do normally, except they join patients in their clinic’s online waiting area rather than its physical one. Clinic staff are notified when a patient arrives in the online waiting area and staff can even transfer patients to other specialists online.

Key features

healthdirect Video Call is a trusted and reliable option both for healthcare professionals and consumers who need to connect without being in the same place. The service is:

  • designed with clinicians’ needs in mind
  • purpose-built for health settings, integrating with healthcare workflows
  • supports workflows that are familiar both to consumers and healthcare providers
  • secure, using high-quality encrypted video technology (WebRTC) available in modern web browsers
  • private, providing health-grade privacy, security and data sovereignty

Benefits to the community

Video Call makes travel optional for patients, especially outside metro areas, providing equity of care.

Video Call significantly reduces barriers, complexities, time and cost, for patients, their carers and healthcare providers. This makes it easy for consumers to access a wide range of health services remotely.

Rather than changing the nature of the health service, Video Call’s model supports the traditional visit to the doctor and allows it to take place in the same familiar way that it would if the patient and healthcare professional were in the same room together.

With Video Call, patients can access a healthcare professional with the reassurance that they are doing so in a safe and private online environment, from the comfort of their home or chosen location, while also removing the stress of travel.
