Coming into the summer holidays among rising COVID cases in many Australian states, it is tricky to know the right thing to do when catching up with friends and family, while helping to reduce the spread of the virus.
With the Omicron variant rising in the Australian community, restrictions easing and people moving around more, there will continue to be cases, which can be worrying.
As a nation we have made a push to achieve vaccination rates of more than 90 per cent for our eligible population, and vaccinated people will experience milder symptoms if they get COVID.
Even though symptoms will be milder, it is still extremely important, particularly as we approach the holiday season, that if you are having friends and family at large gatherings in your home or at a venue, you keep up the hygiene practises we have all learnt over the past two years to help keep everyone safe.
Family and community gatherings can be joyous, sharing events, but I ask that you try not to speak or sing too close to someone else’s face, avoid share platters or dips, wash your hands regularly and cover your face with your elbow if you cough or sneeze. These simple measures will help keep our loved ones safe, particularly the vulnerable and elderly.
I know it might be a tough decision, but if you have even the mildest COVID symptoms, such as a runny nose or scratchy throat, please go and get tested at a testing clinic.
After receiving a PCR test, head straight home and isolate until you receive a negative result. If you are COVID positive, remain isolating and follow the directions given to you by your local public health unit or GP.
Importantly, if you have used a rapid antigen kit to self-test for COVID and get a positive result you must confirm your results by getting a PCR test so you can be supported by the appropriate level of care for your situation during your recovery.
If you are double vaccinated and have mild COVID symptoms, you may be advised that it is safe to manage your symptoms at home. If your symptoms worsen, please, don’t hesitate to call the support services you’ve been provided with, or triple zero (000) if you’re feeling very unwell.
Our healthcare systems have been preparing to cope with any increased demands that may occur as Australia continues to reopen, even over the holiday period. Please call ahead before turning up at a healthcare provider if you have COVID-like symptoms or have tested positive.
The healthdirect website and app are trusted sources of easy-to-read health information and up to date advice about COVID-19, restrictions, testing, and managing your recovery as well as the recovery of other household members at home.
I encourage all Australians to download the healthdirect app, which has a symptom checker with information and advice on how to best manage your symptoms, including when to seek medical help, where to find your nearest healthcare provider, and access to triple zero (000) in an emergency.
These holidays, give your loved ones the gift of peace of mind — if you are eligible, book in for your booster vaccination. Booster vaccinations are available for Australians over the age of 18 who have had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least five months ago. This will help us all enjoy our holiday that little bit more.
