Reconciliation Action Plan launched by Healthdirect Australia

Published: 17 March 2016

Healthdirect Australia is proud to launch our first ‘Reflect’ level Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

A ‘Reflect’ level RAP is designed for organisations starting out on their formal journey of reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and aims to foster respect, build relationships, and identify improvement opportunities.

The launch coincides with Close the Gap Day, a public awareness campaign which began in 2007 as a collaboration between more than 40 peak health, non-governmental and human rights organisations urging Australian governments to commit to closing the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by 2030.

We worked closely with Reconciliation Australia to develop our RAP, which will promote awareness of the history, culture and values of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our staff, and aims to develop stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.

Our RAP will also inform changes to the design and delivery of our range of health and related services so they better address the specific needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Justin Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer of Reconciliation Australia said, “Healthdirect Australia is in a unique position to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by ensuring that health services and employment opportunities are provided in a safe and culturally sensitive environment. One of the key ways organisations like Healthdirect Australia can lead the way is through RAPs. RAPs are a catalyst for action and a driver for equality.”

Healthdirect Australia is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our RAP provides the structure for us to turn good intentions into real actions.
