Finding North Network: Connecting and amplifying the voice of lived experience leadership

Finding North Network (Opens in new tab) is an online platform for Australians with lived and living experience of mental health conditions. It was launched in mid-2021 to enhance connections and amplify the voice of lived experience leadership. The Network is not a therapeutic group or support service. It is a space for individuals to connect, learn, and develop their own lived experience leadership. It is hosted by Mental Illness Fellowship Australia (MIFA), a policy and advocacy organisation.

One of the benefits of being online is that the Network is available to anyone, anywhere across Australia. Since its launch in August 2021, the Finding North Network has grown to include more than 230 active members across all states and territories of Australia.

Finding North Network is a part of a larger project that includes the Finding North website, a mental health and wellbeing education website co-designed by people with a lived experience.

The Co-Design Group aimed to create something hopeful that transcends culture and time, with one Group member saying, “We believe that everyone has their own true North that brings a sense of wellness and happiness, but that it’s not always easy to find and is often a journey we must take to discover ourselves. We felt that Finding North would be the perfect reminder that people’s lived experience is valuable and powerful.”

The Network offers a range of features that allow members to connect with peers across Australia. Features include:

  • group discussions centred around their interests, such as leadership, peer work, policy, and advocacy
  • creating and sharing resources through a personal portfolio
  • access to Finding North Network events, including guest speakers, training, and the latest Lived Experience opportunities
  • access to information about organisations and projects relevant to Lived Experience Leadership.
One of the Network's members shared their experience, saying, "I’ve learned that there are people who are exactly like me, and who will give me the courage to do what I need to live my best life.”

Finding North Network is a valuable resource for Australians with lived and living experience of mental health conditions who are interested in using their experience to positively influence the future of mental health in Australia. It is hoped that the connections made through the platform continue to support people to heal, thrive, and lead.

If this sounds like you, come join the network today!
