Smarter support for epilepsy

Epilepsy Action Australia has created a new online Epilepsy Management Plan (EMP) tool to make epilepsy care simpler, safer and more consistent.

The new Epilepsy Management Plan tool

For many years, people with epilepsy and those who support them, have used the Seizure Management Plans (SMPs). Over time, however, different versions came into use, leading to inconsistencies in how the information was recorded. This has now brought everything together into one streamlined Epilepsy Management Plan (EMP) tool and changed the name to reflect its purpose. These plans go beyond seizure response, to supporting the person’s overall epilepsy management, including safety, medication, triggers, recovery and everyday support needs. The EMP tool is online and easy to use — supporting safer, more confident epilepsy management.

An EMP provides clear, personalised guidance on what to do before, during and after a seizure. It supports consistent seizure first aid, reduces injury risk, improves communication between everyone involved, and helps people with epilepsy confidently participate in school, work and social activities. Anyone can use the EMP tool — and our Epilepsy Nurses are also available to help.

What’s included in an EMP

Once completed, you’ll receive:

  • personalised Epilepsy Management Plan
  • tailored Seizure First Aid Plan
  • optional editable cover letter for schools or employers
  • blank Emergency Medication Management Plan (EMMP) for the treating doctor to complete if the person has emergency medication prescribed.

Since launching in July 2025, almost 3,000 EMPs have been created, with users praising the tool for being clear, practical and easy to complete.

Testimonials

It's amazing! I was dreading having to do a new EMP because I'm never sure what to write or whether I need to have it signed by a doctor. This made the whole process incredibly easy. The first aid plan is brilliant to have as a separate document for people to refer to.

Consumer living with epilepsy

We did a practice/mock run to check use of the tool and found it to be clear and concise and will make the role of a school nurse supporting families so much easier and safer.
