People affected by primary liver cancer and other underlying liver conditions can now access friendly, stigma-free support from a specialist liver nurse by calling Australia’s first dedicated liver cancer support line.

Callers connect with a compassionate and knowledgeable nurse to obtain up-to-date, culturally sensitive information on managing their illness.
Liver Foundation’s CEO, Sally Castle, said the nurse-led support line will provide free telehealth support.
“This service offers non-judgemental support to patients and their loved ones following a diagnosis of liver cancer or liver disease, giving them information they need at the time they need it most,” Ms Castle said.
“But it’s not just about providing information — it’s about empowering individuals with the tools and support they need to make informed decisions and feel cared for at every step of their journey.”
More than 3,000 people are diagnosed with primary liver cancer every year in Australia, and it’s the fastest growing cause of cancer death nationally.
Most patients also have underlying liver diseases including hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis or rare autoimmune conditions such as primary biliary cholangitis. Managing these conditions well is key to preventing progression to liver cancer and to improving cancer outcomes.
First Nations peoples, culturally diverse communities and people in regional areas are more likely to develop liver cancer. But until now, many have struggled to access timely information and support about their liver health, especially outside the cities where there are fewer specialist liver services.
Recognising this need, the Australian Cancer Plan has prioritised equitable access to care, particularly for those in remote and diverse communities.
The Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care, said that specialist support was crucial for people to navigate the complex landscape of cancer treatment.
“By bridging gaps in care and offering tailored guidance, we can significantly improve outcomes for patients and their families,’ he said.
Liver Foundation’s new nurse-led support line represents a vital step toward advancing health equity in cancer care by filling the gaps for priority populations.
It is designed to support people to manage all their liver problems, make fully informed decisions about their care at every stage of the cancer journey, and improve their outlook.
It offers evidence-based guidance on dealing with symptoms, understanding treatment options and navigating care — such as preparing for a doctor’s appointment, or knowing which questions to ask.
While the support line doesn’t replace advice from a GP or liver specialist, it can connect people with appropriate resources and services.
The new, first-of-its-kind service is funded by the Australian Government under the Australian Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program.
Patients with primary liver cancer, loved ones, friends and carers as well as healthcare professionals seeking advice and information for their patients are encouraged to call.
The free nurse-led support line is now available weekdays from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm AEDT on 1800 841 118 for people all over Australia, regardless of their background or circumstances. It offers interpreting in Auslan and up to 150 languages.
