ReachOut and Instagram have launched a series of videos featuring Aussie actor and parent Pia Miranda and a suite of expert guests who explore the challenges and successes families face in today's digital world.

‘Likes and Limits’ aims to empower parents and carers to confidently support their teens to face challenges they may experience when navigating social media. The series demystifies difficult topics and encourages families to approach teen online safety together.

The series is particularly timely given increased public and government discussion around teenage social media usage and mental health. Each episode equips parents and carers with tools to manage digital challenges with their teens.

The series was informed by ReachOut research that showed 59% of parents and carers said they were concerned about young people’s use of social media. In addition, 56% of these parents reported they need access to quality, trusted information that could help them support their young person.

Bringing together parents, teens and mental health experts, the series offers a variety of advice and practical tips informed by clinical evidence, parenting and lived experience.

Throughout the series, host Pia Miranda chats to actor Peter Rowsthorn and his daughter Billie, prominent teen creator George Rayias, and mental health experts Jocelyn Brewer, Dr Preeya Alexander and Nasalifya Namwinga about how to approach social media challenges and champion teen safety and wellbeing, both on and offline.

The series features episodes on body image, screen time, privacy and building community while staying safe.

Meeting the needs of concerned parents

Annie Wylie, Senior Manager at ReachOut, said research and consultation heavily shaped the series.

Each episode addresses an issue we know parents and carers are concerned about, and equips them with tips and advice on how to best support their young person, she said. Importantly, Likes and Limits is based on research, insights from the ReachOut Parents service, as well as a consultation with parents and carers along the way."

“Working with Instagram on this series means it has been purposefully designed for social media so we’re able to meet time-poor parents and carers where they are, in an easy and convenient way.”
