It’s now easier for women to find out which health checks they need thanks to Her Health Check, a new digital tool recently launched by Jean Hailes for Women’s Health.

Available to women around Australia, the free tool provides immediate, evidence-based guidance about the checks and screenings women may need. It also features tailored health check information for First Nations women.

Dr Sarah White, Jean Hailes CEO, says Her Health Check is designed to empower women to put their health first.

“Unfortunately, 42% of Australians don’t know what health checks they should be having, and around a third of us are overdue for those checks. Those checks are critical for catching problems early enough for effective treatment.

“Women are busy, often putting themselves last, so we’ve created a quick and practical tool that gives them clear answers in under five minutes.”

“When women prioritise their health, everyone benefits” adds Dr White.

Her Health Check guides women through a series of simple questions then offers recommendations based their age, cultural background and lifestyle. It also encourages women to share the information they receive with their doctor and discuss which checks are right for them.

More than 26,000 people have used the tool since it launched in September as part of Women’s Health Week.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 82% of Her Health Check survey respondents saying they’d recommend the tool and 54% vowing to make an appointment with their doctor based on the results.

A community approach

To meet the needs of women and reflect the latest medical guidelines, Jean Hailes collaborated with a range of specialists when creating Her Health Check.

“We consulted clinicians, consumer testers and major health organisations, like the Heart Foundation, Kidney Health Australia and Lung Foundation Australia,” says Her Health Check health writer Kate Cross.

We also worked with women from First Nations communities as we wanted to ensure the tool wasn’t just medically accurate, but culturally appropriate too,” she adds.

Her Health Check will continue to evolve based on feedback Jean Hailes receives from the women who use it.

"We hope to one day offer it in more languages so that it can help even more women around Australia," says Ms Cross.

Her Health Check is available to use for free on the Jean Hailes website.
